Demonstration site #1 : Madrid (Spain)
Madrid covers an area of 605.77 km² and has a population of around 3.3 million, which expands to 8,000 km² of area and 6.7 million inhabitants for the Madrid metropolitan area. AVANZA, the leading private operator within the Madrid Transport Consortium, serves as the contractor for essential commuting services connecting the outskirts of Madrid. In the city of Madrid, AVANZA primarily operates in the southern area and extends its coverage to numerous municipalities in the Community of Madrid. Estación Sur, as a strategic transportation node
located in the southern part of Madrid where multiple modes of transportation converge, including passenger transit and freight services, is a critical hub for AVANZA. Its extensive suburban and interurban transport network support millions of daily commuters, boosting regional connectivity and sustainability, and enhancing access to education, healthcare, and commercial services, thus improving residents’ quality of life.
The first UC will develop a DT that will virtually represent the transport network of Madrid, use its open mobility data, integrate new sources, and derive upgraded public transport service in the Community of Madrid, with adaptations from planning and operational perspectives. Besides redesigning inter-city buses schedules/lines and optimising the use of resources, new on-demand mobility service will be studied to boost punctuality and reliability, increasing user satisfaction and adoption. The second UC aims at integrating passenger and freight transportation in the multimodal hub of Estación Sur (South station). The communication system between the various stakeholders will be united for facilitating real-time data exchange, including up-to-date information on traffic conditions to ensure dynamic adjustment of operations (routing, schedules, shared infrastructure use). In particular, synchromodality will be developed to enable 1) coordinated passenger transport service to limit connection delays, and 2) Capacity-as-a-Service of freight in available public transport space.
The main beneficiaries are citizens in the Madrid metropolitan area. The Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM), which coordinates the public transport operations across multiple providers (among which AVANZA) in the Community of Madrid, has provided a Letter of Intent to participate in the project co-creation activities and governance. Freight companies and public transport operators will benefit from the Capacity-as-a-Service use case, which aim at reducing their costs, their delays and improving the user experience. Finally, the DT use case will enable CRTM and AVANZA to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the city’s transport network, empowering them to make more informed urban planning decisions.
